Its not my computer, its my uncles, it has win xp home
loaded up. It boots and runs winxp perfectly fine, up
until a few minutes after you click the user name, then
it continues loading, and if your quick you can open
programs, but after a couple of minutes, programs freeze,
and some go to (not responding) ctrl + alt + del
occasionally brings up taskmgr, start menu works, certain
desktop items work, but it you try my documents, internet
explorer, my computer, control panel, etc, it'll show the
loading icon then do nothing at all. Any suggestions, as
everything I have tried simply hasn't worked

Thanks
Paul

Does Event Viewer offer any clues as to the cause?

Make a note of the precise text of any error message. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Post details of the Error Report and we can see if we are able to help.

What do you mean by it'll show the loading icon? Is it a torch looking to left and then right?

Check the setting in Services for WIA (Windows Image Acquisition). Start, Administrative Tools, Services. If the setting is Automatic right click on Windows Image Acquisition, select properties and change Automatic to Manual and click on Apply and OK. Restart the computer and see if it reboot quicker.

I have had problems with WIA. Does your Uncle have an HP Scanner? If yes what model? The scanner may be a red herring!

Righto, changed WIA from automatic to manual, He does
have a HP scanner which is integrated into a all-in-one
officjet V series.

I checked the event viewer, and its full of errors,
ranging from DCOM to COM+ to telephony service not
starting.

I've just run SFC to check system file integrity, and it
ran successfully

Its slightly difficult to download apps to scan for
spyware when you can't get most things to run, like IE.

Oh, and when i said waiting icon i meant the arrow mouse
pointer with the hour glass on it, which appears for 6-8
seconds, then nothing happens

Any other suggestions are welcome
Thanks

Can you post details of the Error Reports.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Sometimes to keep Error Reports handy I paste them into email which I send to myself.
