Win XP freezes after logon.

My computer running wonXP freezes after logon and only
shows the wallpaper but does not load the start menu are
the desktop. Is there any fix to this. Thanks a bunch.
 
Ron is it just xp freezing or the computer?
Does the mouse still operate? If the whole thing is freezing you may have a
heat problem. Check that the processor fan is working properly.
 
The mouse and keyboard freezes at that point and there is
only a blank screen,in this case the wallpaper. What is
not clear is why this only happens after logon. I dont
think its the heat as it works fine until it tries to load
the desktop and start menu.
