When we shut down our Inspiron 1100 Dell Laptop with Win
XP, we get the screen "shutting down" but it just hangs
there. We have to remove the battery to reboot. Any
ideas or help appreciated.

Thanks, Stephen

How old is the laptop? Still under warranty? If so contact Dell for
support. They are pretty good at support. If not and you don't want to
pull the battery to shut down just hold the power button for at least 8
seconds. Most computers now days will shut down only if you hold the power
button down.

As for you hanging problems, go into Task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del at same
time) and see what programs are running and which processes are running
before attempting the shutdown. If any programs are "not responding" shut
them down with the End Task feature. If you press Ctrl/Alt/Del when the
computer hangs will this take you to the Task Manager? If so you may then
see what process or program is hung.

Recommend to have all drivers updated and all critical and recommended
updates done to XP also.
