Win-XP crashes when network card inserted

Windows XP Home version freezes when WiFi Network card is
inserted. Everything was working as I left the laptop run
the other night. When I got up in the morning, everything
was frozen. When I tried to re-boot, the system freezes
while loading if the card is in the PCMCIA card slot. If I
insert the card while Windows is running, upon trying to
access the internet, the system crashes again.

We are talking a completel system freeze with everything
coming to a halt. CD, mouse, everything. Using Escape or
the 3 finger salute doesn't get any responce at all either.

As I said, everything was working one night, and the next
morning it wasn't.

I've done a complete scan for viruses. The drivers have
been un-installed and re-installed. I've tried 2 different
locations with different receivers with the same result.

I have Norton Firewall and virus software. I have tried
disabling it and still got the same result.

I also tried adjusting the firewall to allow some things
and notify me when it happened. It reported a scan and
blocking of the UPNP 1900 Rule just before it froze up
again. I don't know what this port is or anything about
this rule.

I don't think the firewall is the problem since it still
froze with the Firewall disabled. but I don't have a clue
as to what is causing this.

Any ideas?

Windows XP's System Restore feature is just the thing for a situation
like this, where you're not sure what went wrong.

Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System
Restore and tell it to restore your computer to an earlier time. Pick
the time just before the problem occurred.

I have a similar problem in that i can insert the wi-fi
card and use the internet. to a degree. if i try to
download anything or copy anything across the internal
network the whole system just locks up to the same degree
as Lloyd's problem. If i use the 10/100bT port on the
laptop it has no such problems, but sort of defeats the
object of wireless networking...
