Hello All... Have a small issue on a network here..

I have 2 XP workstations that have access to the internet via dialup
modem. They are also members of the domian.

For security reasons, the boss here wants these users to disable (or
disconnect) the network cable before they dial up.

Here is the problem... DNS does not work when the network cable is
unplugged. I can dial up... alll as normal... I can ping external IP
addresses, but cant resolve names... therefore cant browse

IF I plug the network cable back in.... DNS works... browsing works...
everything IS OK.... I can do all of this while connected to the net,
but DNS ONLY works when the LAN is plugged in.....

All setttings are pretty much default....

I have never seen this before..... Is there something I am doing
wrong.?

Thanks in advance...

First of all, you boss is right. You never have a modem in use when logged
on to a domain. It creates a back door.

The dial up connection should pick up DNS from the ISP. But static
configurations will override dynamic ones. How are your clients configured
for IP on the LAN?

Hello Rob, thanks for the reply.

The settings on this network are pretty standard.... DHCP via the
server. There is only on server onsite.... and there is a cisco router
which is used to contact the head office (which is set as the default
gateway in the DHCP config).

THe thing that gets me... is XP is smart enough to realise that [media
disconnected] means no IP traffic... and every other computer I have
seen will just dial out no problems...

There are no static settings what so ever.... Dynamic IP.... Dynamic
DNS...

When I do an IPCONFIG it doesnt give any LAN ip settings besides the
[media disconnected] message... which is alll correct...

kinda has me stumped....

thanks in advance..

Is your DHCP server providing DNS settings or are they configured manually.
A manual configuration will take precedence over a automatic one and cause
the problem you are desribing.

Not too sure on that one.... willl have to have a look on the sever
next week and see if it is dishing out DNS.....

I just though that the DNS settings bound to the NIC would be
cancelled once the cable is pulled out.....

WIlll check the server..
