I have recently received emails advertising software of all kinds.
The price for Win XP pro sp2 is about $50. They say it is OEM and
there is no box or books with it. Is this a scam or could it be
legit??
Thanks

Come on - if it sounds too good to be true, and it's advertised via spam,
then it most definitely is! It is *NOT* legit to sell XP OEM without an item
of *non* peripheral hardware. This means that a sound card, graphics card,
motherboard or hard drive would validate it, a mouse, keyboard or any kind
of cable (which is the norm in these cases) would not.

All the ones I've seen come from Eastern Europe, somewhere
unspecified. Now how likely is that to be legit?

Way back in the day I bought an OEM copy of nt 4 workstation for 12
bucks I think it was. That was back before ebay was the giant it is now.
It was on haggle.com I believe.

Just delete spam without ever opening it.

Anyone can decide to take a loss on software but it's not
likely on WInXP. Even though you might not get a box or
books with OEM, you should expect it to be more than $50.
This has scam written all over it.

Scam. OEM Windows must be sold as a part of a qualifying hardware
package so that there is a one to one association of hardware and OS
key.

Read the fine print and you will see that this is considered "BackUp"
software. No, it is not a scam by definition. You get a perfectly good
working copy of XP with a Key that has the activation requirements
circumvented and is therefore very illegal to **get caught** using...

Most of these offers are a scam. Suggest maybe checking E-Bay, price may
not be as cheap but at least there you have some recourse if what you
receive is not as advertised.

Regardless of the legality of the software (and I'd be dubious of that), I
make a point of not buying from spammers. Sure, my refusal to buy from them
is but a drop in the ocean as regards their profits, and it's not as though
everyone is suddenly going to act like me, but I like to retain some
principles.
