containing Win 98 / Me platform PCs driving me crazy.

XP boxes don't see 98/Me boxes
98/Me boxes don't see XP boxes

Have run the XP network set-up files from the XP CD on the
98 boxes.

I must be mising something!

I've written a web page that should help you get everything working:

Adding Windows XP to an Existing Network
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/addxp.htm

Since you've already run XP's network set-up on the 98 boxes, you
might need to change some network settings manually.

It seems that this is a popular problem! After MUCH
frustration I found the solution!

After running the wizard normally, and then enabling
NETBios to run under TCP/IP I was able to ping either
machine from the other but still wasn't able to see either
machine in My Network Places.

I found the Microsoft Knowledgebase Article # Q301041 that
tells how to install NETBEUI (which is "no longer
supported" onto my XP system. Following those
instructions and installing the NETBEUI protocol solved
the problem. All file and printer sharing now work fine.

NETBEUI greatly slows down a network which is why it is no longer supported.
The larger the network, the slower it gets.
