I have an existing network on 3 system at home. All are
run through a small router to a cable modem and run
Windows 2000. I just added a new computer with hyper-
threading and so upgraded to XP. Now it seems that XP has
taken over the network the other two computer cannot
access anything nor do can I see either of the computers.
The XP machine has access to the net when turned on but
the other machine does not. When I turn off the XP
machine my other machine has net access ones again. What
can I do to have both machines use the router/cable
connection and talk once again? Without upgrading both to
XP.

It's possible that you inadvertently enabled Internet Connection
Sharing on the XP computer. That could happen if you ran XP's Network
Setup Wizard and chose the wrong option.

Run the Network Setup Wizard and tell it that the XP computer connects
to the Internet through a residential gateway. That's the Wizard's
strange term for a router/cable connection.

Still having problems. Here is what I have tried.

Computer browser set up correctly on XP.

Going through a registered gateway now in my network
connections.

Tried turning down my gigabit Lan from auto to 10mb half
duplex.

Changing workgroup names just in case they had been named
the same and set up two independent groups under the same
names.

Enabled NetBios over TCP/IP on both computers.

Turned off the ICF firewal.

I am at a loss, I can connect to the Internet with Xp. I
cannot connect with the 2000 machine unless the XP machine
is off or the network cable has been removed. The moment I
plug in the Network cable it does not allow the 2000
machine to connect to the outside world in any way. I
cannot ping from 2000 machine to router, or xp machine,
and the xp machine does not see the 2000 machine at all.
