Win XP and VPN's

I am having problems seeing files when I make a connection using the VPN. The two computers are using Win XP Pro. I can establish a VPN connection but I can not view any files. I am not getting any errors. I used Remote Desktop and made the connection and was able to open files without any problems. When making the VPN connection both computers are showing the VPN connection. I have set up drive C as shared on the computer I am trying to connect to. Is there anything else I would need to run/install? I have read a few of the articles on VPN but none of them mentioned anything about setting up shared files or how to access the files. If anybody knows of a link it would be appreciated if you left it.

Andy,

I'm struggling with the same thing, except my client is dialing in with
Win98. I have just started to get some success by making sure both computers
have the IPX network protocal on (as well as the TCP/IP). Then I'm able to
see some of the computers on the network and some of the shared resources.
But sometimes I click on a computer and after a minute or so it says the
resource isn't available on the network. I'm hoping its just the slow dial
up connection. I'm going to try a broadband connection from home tonight.
I'll let you know...

I agree, there should be some better documention on this whole thing. Some
of the questions I have...

1. If I'm trying to connect to a host computer that is part of a domain,
does the client also have to be part of the domain?

2. Does the user on the XP host have to be a member of the network domain
or just the XP's domain?

3. Why does it seem IPX is needed?

4. Are there time out values that can be adjusted for dial-up.

etc. etc...

I have not tried the IPX I will give that a try. The documentation isn't the greatest. I have gone to Microsofts KB and did a search for VPN. It has given me some good information, but nothing to answer my question. here is a link you may have already seen but just in case... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314076&Product=winxp the title is: HOW TO: Configure a Connection to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) in Windows XP there are others. None of them, if I remember correctly, said anything regarding IPX, but I could be mistaken.

Andy,

I've had some more success. I don't think the IPX is required. I found a
post where the person just had to specify the computer name in explorer,
i.e. \\computer_name to see the folders on that system. That worked for me.
I was even able to map a network drive to a folder this way. You're just
not going to see the computer you are conecting to, or its network compters,
automatically.

I did see another post that implied that if the host computer is on a
network with WINS or DNS, that the client computer's VPN connection has a
spot to put in the IP address of the WINS and DNS computers. I'm going to
try this tonight from home...
