Hi,

I'm getting a Windows Update Error '[Error number: 0x80072EFD]' when I try
to do an update.

Using Win 2000 Pro SP4.

Please advise.

Thanks,

MS

See if the information from the Windows Update Troubleshooter helps you to
resolve the problem:
When accessing the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x80072EFD error
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/showarticle.aspx?articleid=16&ln=en

Thanks Patti.

The adding of trusted sites to Internet Explorer's settings did not
resolve the problem, nor did adding the trusted sites to my firewall's
settings.

The other suggested resolution involved clearing exceptions in my LAN
settings, according to the following instructions:

----------
1. Remove characters from the proxyexception list, and then clear the proxy
cache. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.
4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

net stop wuauserv
proxycfg -d
proxycfg -u
net start wuauserv
----------

There were no exceptions to clear (but I turned off my proxy server just
in case).

I quit IE, and stopping and later starting the 'wuauserv' service worked
fine but the proxycfg commands both failed with the error: unable to
locate Dll WINHTTPS.dll in the specified path. I got the same error when I
tried again having switched to the \winnt\system32 directory which is
where the proxycfg executable is located.

The update problem remains. :-(

Any ideas?

Thanks,

MS

Even though the Symptoms section of this MSKB article states that this is a
problem with 2K SP1 and SP2 (not mentioning that it is a problem with SP3 or
SP4), it certainly sounds like it is the problem that you're experiencing
when trying to run proxycfg:

BUG: "WinHTTP5.dll Could Not Be Found" Error Message When You Run
Proxycfg.exe after You Install MSXML 4.0 SP2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829735/

If you don't have access to a computer that is running Windows Server 2003,
then perhaps you could obtain the hotfix that is mentioned in the Hotfix
information section of this MSKB article:

The Proxycfg.exe configuration tool is available for WinHTTP 5.1

Regards,

Thanks once again Patti.

Since I don't use it and couldn't even remember why I installed it, I
decided to try and get proxycfg working by uninstalling in MS XML 4 SP2.
The uninstall worked fine but proxycfg has now completely disappeared, a
search revealed it is NOT in any of the windows dirs.

How do I get it back? Any advise would be really appreciated.

I can't copy it from a Windows Server 2003 directory (as suggested in one
of the help files you linked) as don't have access it Windows Server 2003.
To get the hotfix I'll need to subscribe to Microsoft Product Support
Services which will be expensive and I'd prefer to do a clean OS install
to resolve the issue than pay to subscribe.

Any advise?

Thanks,

Due to other commitments, I did not have time to visit the newsgroups over
the past couple of days, and have just now had time to return to your
thread. I'm happy to hear that you were successful at resolving the problem
:-)
