Keep getting a 'cannot extend error' when trying to extend size=n a volume
using diskpart. The file structure has been ntfs from the beginning. Any
solutions?

Do you have free space in which you are trying to extend the partition? If
you don't have free space (unpartitioned space) that is likely the problem
as XP requires free space to perform that function. Third party software
such as Partition Magic can resize partitions giving the user free space, XP
cannot do that.

If you have the free space, then I suggest you take this question to a
Windows server newsgroup.

I couldn't find a win server newsgroup, but I didn't spend enough time
trying either. I think this is a possible XP event also. This girl
installed win server 2003 on a brand new dell. She setup three logical
drives it seems like. I'm not at the machine now. She said that the 'c'
volume, which is volume 1 is not big enough being only two gigs. I think
the problem is like you said, there's not enough free space in that volume
to allow an extension. Would there not be a way to take what's in that
volume and copy it to a newly made larger volume?

Thanks, Kevin

Yes, you could copy it to a large volume but again, you cannot do this
natively in XP unless enough free space exists to create such a volume. If
no free space exists, it would require third party software such as
Partition Magic to resize the current partition(s) to create the free space.
