Win Search like DOS FIND?

-- I’d been adding posts to the “search by content†thread, but it was
getting rather long (17 posts). I therefore started a new thread named “How
do I do something like DOS FIND with W/E search?†which later showed up in
the list of threads. Some kind person then gave the name of a commercial
product (freeware?) that purportedly provides search functions that I haven’t
been able to get out of Vista Search. When I went back a little later the
whole thread disappeared. I’m glad I didn’t add my post to the original
thread with 17 posts. It would be shame to get it deleted too.

I can understand MS’s reluctance to advertise other people’s products on
their website. I’m guessing that is why the whole thread got deleted. It
does seem rather vindictive, because my first post sought help using MS
products, not someone else’s. I’d resubmit my post, but I’m afraid it will
just get deleted again.

If MS doesn’t want to discuss this topic here, can you tell me of another,
more private forum, where things don’t get disappeared suddenly? I’ll also
make the more general comment that the Vista Search function raises a lot of
questions in this forum, and many of the questioners don’t go away happy.
Can you point me to a website where Vista Search is described completely but
concisely, especially w.r.t. searching for content? The help files lead one
to a lot of irrelevant discussions of I/E explorer and other software. I
need Windows Explorer Search documentation, only.

I don't think that MS is deleting threads on purpose. Anyway, here's my
reply again:

Hi Thuse,

simply download the free and almost fully functional trial of XYplorer, a
popular alternative file manager that does a speedy and reliable non-indexed
search:
http://www.xyplorer.com/download.htm
The software is portable, hence there's no installation and no changes to
your registry or system. Get the "No-install package", extract it to some
folder, and run XYplorer.exe.
Browse to the folder you want to search files in. Then, on the tabbed panel
on the bottom, select the Find Files tab, and enter your name pattern
(cy*.* ) into the Name field (tab Name & Location) and your contents (GRID)
into the Contents field (tab Contents). Press F3 (Find Now).

Hope this helps,
Donald

Thanks, Donald

We'll see how long this thread lasts. To be fair, another concern MS may
have is it allowing phishers or other malicious posters to lead us astray.

You must have gotten similar questions from other potential customers. Do
you have any way to set our minds at ease on these issues?

I'm not Donald but I thought I'd allay your fears about posts being deleted.
They are not and this is not a forum, which is probably why you think there
is some moderator removing things. I don't know why you don't see
everything, but you'll have a much richer experience if you stop using the
dreadful web interface and set up a real newsreader, which is very easy to
do. See below for explanations:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn
to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you
can use Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have
it. Here are some links to information about newsgroups:

Malke, I did find the other thread. It wasn't deleted, or it was deleted and
restored, based on one's level of paranoia.

Thanks for the advice about getting more proficient on using this newsgroup
hiding behind a blog interface. I do agree that the web interface does have
some dreadful aspects. I've decided I've put enough time into this study.
If making Vista Search work properly is this tough I'll just stick with DOS
or go look for a non-MS alternative method. I'll wait for some MVP to answer
the questions posted on how to use Vista Search for content in that other
thread.

I have this image of MVPs circling around this pile of nastiness sitting on
the pavement, waiting for one of the other guys to clean it up. I can see
why no one wants to be identified as an authority on this topic.
