How can I uninstall WIndows Media Player? I have WMPlayer 10 and Win XP
Pro. Th eprogram will not start--produces an error message that it
encountered a problem and needs to close. I downloaded the latest version
of theprogram but it still won't work. I'd like to try uninstalling the
program but can't figure out how.

Try this:

check the checkmark box "Show Updates" in the
add/remove programs (on the top of that window)

and then scroll down, you will see an entry from windows media player 10

but you should not be having such problems...

try posting this to the microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player
newsgroup

Hi

WMP 10 was installed with XP, then it can't be uninstalled. You will need
to use System Restore for an uninstallation and to revert back to version 9.

Hi,

Control Panel/Add & Remove, at the top of the dialog check the box to "show
updates". Then you will find WMP 10 listed among the uninstallable listings.

Hi Rick

May be my systems, but that's what I thought originally - Add/Remove.
However, if WMP has been upgraded from 9 to 10, the only way I've found to
revert is via SR.

Hmm, I just checked two machines and the option to uninstall WMP10 is mixed
in with the hotfixes, but is there in both cases, Will. AFAIK, it is
supposed to be.

Well, I uninstalled Windows Media Player, rebooted, installed Win Media
Player 10, etc. However, as soon as the install was done, the program
apparently started up and I got the same error message as before: "Windows
Media Player has encountered a problem and has to close..." The details
refer to "ModName: shdocvw.dll. Modver: 6.3.2900.2805, Offset: 00017cae. I
tried searching the KB and found a bunch of similar-sounding error messages,
but the problmes were not exactly the same and the fixes they recommended,
such as checking the date and time, all seem quite OK. I will take the
suggestion and post a message on the board for the media player.

Hmmm - it doesn't show up here on any of my PCs - odd.
