Win Me to Win XP Home upgrade - C: drive corrupted

Selected upgrade option for install. System analysis
reports some minor hardware (scanner and printer) and
software (atomic clock sync) issues. Completes analysis
OK and writes setup files. Reboots, XP Setup or Cancel,
select XP Setup. Goes through System inspection,
preparing install, preparing install, starting setup, and
then flashes to blue screen with the following message:
"Setup has determined that drive C: is corrupted and
cannot be repaired. Setup cannot continue. To quit
Setup, press F3."

Me runs fine, ScanDisk in Thorough mode of C: is OK. fdisk
in DOS shows 3 partions, C,D,E. C is Windows, D/E are
Linux. Only weird part is Win Explorer shows C: drive as
having 18.6G of capacity, which is entire drive (C+D+E).

Unfortunately, this is an issue with drive overlay
programs that were used with older motherboards to support
large disk drives.

No tools available from Western Digital would remove the
overlay program. Only alternative was to erase the hard
drive to get rid of overlay program and then partiton,
format, do a clean install of XP and then reinstall
everything else. Very ugly solution.

Bottom line is that the transition from Win Me to Win XP
may be very, very painful.
