Hi,
Win XP Home. SP 2.
When I boot, an icon appears in the sys. tray inviting me to install the
Windows Installer 3.1. When I try to do this I get "Access Denied".
I have tried to install from the Microsoft site (KB893803-V2) but always get
the same message"Access Denied". The PC then re-boots.
Can anybody shed any light on this please.
Cheers.

I'm guessing here, but are you logged in as an adminstrator account when
trying to install? If not, try that.

Here is my reply again to your earlier post:
Hi Classic,
Try to run disk Clean Up and Defrag in Safe Mode, also make sure this
machine is malware free/virus free then try the installation.
If you still get the "Access denied" error message open a run command and
type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need XP CD for this.

Hi...
Check to see that you have any popup blockers turned off temporarily.
Try going to this page to validate and grab the download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en
When you click continue to validate, right click the bar that appears
near the top of your browser and click to allow or install, then run.

Check this microsoft web page for further information on the windows
installer and why it may fail:

Knowledge Base Article on the Windows Installer:

More info (click on left to expand Win32 and COM Development,

See if this gets you anywhere.

Hi All,
Update on my Win Installer 3.1 problem.
I have tried all the fixes mentioned by all the well intentioned people but
alas nothing, but nothing works.
This all started after I had done a repair using my OEM CD. It would appear
that after reading a load of posts kindly supplied by Ness that this is a
problem well known to Microsoft who appear unable to furnish a solution.
Am very reluctant to reformat and reinstall my OS, have so many programs and
apps. on there which will need reinstalling. Trouble is I have a 250GB drive
with Acronis TruImage installed and although I can access two external 80GB
drives I cannot clone the 250 GB drive (which holds XP Home) 'cos they are
too small.
If anybody else can point me in the direction of a fix I will be eternally
greatful.
Cheers.

Hello - did you ever get a fix for this? I have the same scenario - did a
fix with the disk, and now WI 3.1 will not install, keeping updates from
installing as well.
