win.ini & system.ini tab - msconfig.exe

G

Guest

Question....
I installed the IE 7 Update and didn't like it so uninstalled it and went
back to IE6.

Now I use the msconfi.exe program in run in the start menu, becuase I
selectivly startup what things I want.

I noticed my system.ini and win.ini tabs are completly empty....I checked
the two files in the Windos folder and they are 0 Bytes. Is this normal ? I
remember that they did have some things typed on those two tabs. Also did
the IE7 install or uninstall clear them ? Basically is it normal that these
two tabs are cleared and nothing is on them ? System seems to be running
fine, but I don't think these are supposed to be cleared.

Thanks in advance.

system.ini & win.ini should be in C:\WINDOWS

There should be a system.ini.backup & a win.ini.backup in C:\WINDOWS\pss

If you do have those backup files, copy them, change the names of the files
to system.ini. & win.ini and move them to C:\WINDOWS. Or just copy the
contents of each one and paste into the corresponding 0 byte file that you
have.

Thank you very much Wesley.
I copied the contents of both those backup files in the pss folder, and
everything shows up in the msconfig.exe now.

Do you have idea what happened ?
Do you think the IE7 install and then uninstall may have did this ?
Also was everything working fine becuase I had the info needed in those
backup ini files ?

Thanks again and help was greatly appreciated.Bob

Hi Bob,
Do you have idea what happened ?

Not a clue.
Do you think the IE7 install and then uninstall may have did this ?

Mmmmm, could be. I have seen a lot of posts about IE7 problems. I still
have IE6 and do not plan on getting IE7.
Also was everything working fine becuase I had the info needed in those
backup ini files ?

Both the win.ini and system.ini are only needed by OLD 16-bit applications,
old MS-DOS stuff. They are just included with Windows XP for backwards
compatibility, if you do have old 16-bit programs that you are running.
Windows XP needs win.ini and system.ini for absolutely nothing.

WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI tabs
[[On these two tabs, you can enable or disable services and startup programs
meant for earlier versions of Windows. Both the systemroot\System.ini and
systemroot\Win.ini files are not required by Windows XP and
these files are maintained only for compatibility with older software that
does not use the registry to save settings. The System.ini file is used to
start and store information for drivers and services; the Win.ini file plays
a similar role for applications.]]

[[SYSTEM.INI is the old windows location for listing system files to be
loaded, such as drivers and fonts.

The windows registry has taken over the primary functions of win.ini and
system.ini. These are just left for backwards compatibility. These files are
still loaded and processed but there is much less data in them since post
Windows 3.1.]]
