I tried to remove spyware the old fasioned way, by deleting files. When i
load msconfig and go to the win.ini tab theres nothing there, and my vaio
wont load windows, i get the loading windows xp screne then nothing, my
display is blank, but if i restart in safe mode, all is fine, any ideas
people???

See if there is a win.ini.backup file in C:\WINDOWS\pss If there is, copy
it to C:\WINDOWS and rename it to win.ini

WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI tabs
[[On these two tabs, you can enable or disable services and startup programs
meant for earlier versions of Windows. Both the systemroot\System.ini and
systemroot\Win.ini files are not required by Windows XP and
these files are maintained only for compatibility with older software that
does not use the registry to save settings. The System.ini file is used to
start and store information for drivers and services; the Win.ini file plays
a similar role for applications.]]

Thanx very much, worked a treat. Its good to know that folder exists.
Another quick question : What firewall / virus protection would you
recommend, i do have norton on my computer but my subscription ran out around
4 months ago, should i renew or replace with something else?

Thanx

Andy

Most experienced people here will recommend *against* Norton. There are
several freeware choices that work well. I use Avast anti-virus and the free
version of Zone Alarm, and I'm happy with that combination.

I agree with Ken, sort of.

Make sure that your XP firewall is turned on, right now.

I use AVG Free for antivirus and ZoneAlarm free for a firewall.

Get Your AVG 7 for free!

ZoneAlarm free

Uninstall Norton.

Four months is a long time, filling the castle moat long after the
barbarians have already entered the castle.
