In Win Explorer, what is the setting that allows View>Details to be the
default? thanks

Configure Windows Explorer with the view settings you want.
Click on Tools on the toolbar at the top of the window.
Select Folder Options from the menu.
Click on the View tab of Folder Options.
Hit the "Apply to all folders" button.
Click OK.
