Win Explorer adds sinle-letter separators - how'd that start?

Hi All,

All of a sudden the right half of one of my Windows Explorer windows has a
set of A-names preceded by the letter A, B-names by the letter B, etc. A
companion W.E. window has not received such an embellishment. I'd like to
get rid of this "feature" in the first window.

The embellished window's View has "Details" selected; so does the "plain"
window.
The View/Customize ... options are identical for the two windows.
The Tools/Folder Options are identical, as well.

But that gave me the inspiration on how to get rid of the embellishment. I
closed the "fancy" window and clicked "Apply to All Windows" in the View tab
of the plain window. When I opened a Windows Explorer window again, it was
plain. Before I elected this option, new windows were embellished.
Success!

But where did this "feature" come from all of a sudden?

Hi All,

I found it, sort of: the View menu in a Windows Explorer window has an
Arrange Icons submenu which includes a "Show in Groups" item. That item was
checked in each of my the top-level folders in each logical drive.

Unchecking that item got rid of the embellishment. But there must be some
other way to shut off this feature entirely, a Registry entry in all
liklihood.

Any ideas?
