Trying to run an old CD. The read me file says=Quote
MS-DOS 5.0 or better or Windows 95 (does NOT run under Windows NT)

Yes, XP is "NT" based. You will / may need to run this under a
Compatibility mode or under DOSBox.

Yes. "XP" is the marketing name for what, under the hood, is called
Windows NT 5.0.
