hi folks,

I upgraded one of my machines to Win 2000 Pro. Attached
to the USB port on the Pro machine is an HP 5550. Works
fine from the Pro machine.

I am now unable to access the printer from the 98
machine. It used to work fine.

When I attempt to install the printer on the Pro machine
to allow other OS to print to it, the installation program
asks for a driver found on the Win 2000 server disk, which
I don't own.

I hoping that someone reading this can either help me find
the right driver or clue me into the right way to set this
up.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi rob,

the Windows 2000 Server CD contains drivers not only for W2k, but also
for Win9x and WinNT. If you don't have such a CD, do the following:

Go to www.hp.com and download the drivers for !!!Win2k!!! and Windows
98 of the same type (both PS or both PCL5e or both...). This is really
a good idea, as the additional drivers have to be compatible with the
one installed for W2k. If you do so, this is the case.

If asked for the location of the W2k Server CD, simply browse to the
directory where you unpacked the hp-win98-drivers (look for the
inf-file) and it will do.
(Not in all, but in most cases - this is M$)

If some errors accur, try some other drivers (eg PCL).
This is a try-and-error thing!

cu,
Flo
