win 98 won't recognize nic

After installing a buslink cdrw, my win98 1st edition will no longer
recognize my smc nic. The nic worked right before installing this cdrw and
still functions great in win2000. I have unplugged the cdrw, uninstalled
the drivers, and checked in safe mode for ghost drivers, one of which I
found and deleted. Any ideas other than installing a different nic?
