I have Win. XP but the Scrabble CD I have runs on 95 or 98. I can install it
and I have tried using the compatibility wizard and settings. When I click on
play my screen goes black except for the arrow which is only visible if I
move it to the bottom of the screen. I end up having to do a cold shutdown of
my machine to get the desktop back up. I've uninstalled the game and
reinstalled it, tried various compatibility settings, and checked for
updates. All without any luck. Does anyone out there have this program that
can tell me how to get it to work? Infogrames doesn't support it anymore and
I love to play scrabble. My PC is a HP Pavilion with Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz,
504 MB RAM. Thanks

When you use compatibility mode you will have to INSTALL in this mode as
well. Create a short cut to the installation program by sending a short
cut to the desktop and change the short cut to the desired
compatibility. Install from there and create a short cut to the
installed program with the compatibility you need.

Ok, I sure appreciate your help and your trying to keep it simple for me. I
not sure what you want me to do though. The scrabble program is already
installed. Should I remove it first and if so then how do I create a shortcut
for it if it is not installed to click on the icon? I can right click on it
now and create a shortcut on my desktop but that is with it already
installed. I have gone to properties and changed the compatibility to 98 from
the shortcut but there is no choice to install from the shortcut and you say
to install from there. Do you mean that I should create a shortcut before
installing the game that will be "empty" and then when I install the game and
it offers a choice of folders to be placed in, put it in that shortcut? How
do I do this? Thank You again for your help and patience.

HI!

Thanks THOMAS!! I have had Scrabble 2 for 3 years or so. It DID work on my
old computer! I got a new DELL about 2 years ago, ever since then it wouldn't
work. I bought another copy of Scrabble 2 on EBAY because it said works with
XP(the red box, not blue) I always thought it wouldn't work because of SPII,
I had XP on the old computer. SPII came with the new DELL. I just tried this
compatibility Wizard thing. I was going to give up! Because I have had this
Scrabble game work with ME, and 98. I finally tried using the NT setting it
worked!! What it would do with the other settings is...it would do everything
till you played your first word then hit the "play" button then it would die.
I have set it to the NT setting, I played a full game, then I actually
rebooted my computer, and it STILL works!!!

Thanks again THOMAS!!!!

Compatibility Step by Step:

1. Uninstall your present version of the game
2. Insert your game CD, if auto run starts: exit.
3. Open Windows Explorer
4. Browse to your game CD and locate the installation file. It is
usually an exe file with a name like install or autoplay.
5. Create a short cut by right clicking this file and choose 'send to
desktop..'
6. Close Windows Browser
7. Right click your new icon on the desktop, choose 'properties' and
set your compatibility options.
8. Click the icon to install the game. If it doesn't work go back to
step 4 and try a different file.
9. After installing the game locate the file starts your game. Easiest
way is to right click the latest icon (installed by the game), choose
'properties' and click on 'find target'. Now proceed the same way as
described in steps 4 to 7.

Hope it works like for ScrabTed

Thank You Thomas for trying to help me. I followed your instructions step by
step but it still won't work. I set up the shortcut for installation and
changed the compatibility settings and then did the same for the file to
start the game. I can tell that the settings changed because of the way my
desktop looks when I click on install or on play, but right after the desktop
changes the total screen goes black except for the cursor if I move it to the
bottom of the screen. I then have to turn off my machine and do a restart to
get my desktop back. I've done it several time with different compatibility
settings with no luck. So thanks again, I guess I'll have to break down and
buy a new copy of the game after all.

Some old games simply do not run on XP, doesn't matter what you do.
SimIsle comes to mind, a game I played on a 95 machine but cannot get to
run properly. Mind you, it starts, but after about 10 minutes it backs out.
Summary: if you like it or not, sometimes you have to upgrade\update.
