A friend of mine cannot boot into windows 98 (not se) and would like
to get some of his personal data off the hard drive. He can however
get into safe mode.

Now I know that I could simply take the hard drive out and put it into
another computer as a slave and transfer the data that way. But
imagine this was a paying client and he didn't want the PC/hard drive
to leave his premises.

My question is this, I have an external hard drive formatted into 4
partitions as FAT32/FAT32/FAT32/NTFS. In order for windows 98 to see
this drive software must be installed.

If I connect it to the USB port on his pc and boot into safe mode am I
right in thinking that the external drive will not be seen by windows
and that I will not be able to no install the win98 drivers as the
CD-ROM drivers are not loaded in safe mode?

Hope that makes some kind of sense..............

Cheers

He's booting from the master on the primary controller?

Just take the cover off his case...and make the change.

Not much, Dave! lol You lost me from...'My question is this...'

Is this a USB drive we're talkin' about?...or an IDE drive?

Any what part is hypothetical?...and what part is real?

Remember to honor our troops...past and present.

And have a nice Memorial Day weekend.

Hi Trent and thanks for the reply.

I fully understood my question - but then I would I wrote it.

In a nutshell (I hope) Can you tell me if an operating system that can
only boot into safe mode can see and external drive connected by usb?

If not, is there any software/hardware tweak or any other way to
enable the operating system to see the external drive?

Cheers

I don't think Win98 (SE or not) would be able to see any USB devices if it
is booting up in Safe Mode.
