Win 7: clean install with downloaded file?

So... I preordered Win 7 and was able to download the files today. I
got three files and a key.

I intend to do a clean install, but it's not obvious how to do this with
the .exe file I was sent. It's not an .iso that's for sure.

Any of you guys tried this yet? What's the procedure?

I should have specified I have downloaded the upgrade version. It
should be possible to do a clean install with it. Yes?

I think you specified that in the subject line.

"Re: Win 7 upgrade over XP..."

But I cannot tell you what the "over XP...clean install" meant.

Usually, Yes, if you have a proof of purchase prior version
original CD. Let us know.

If your running XP the "upgrade" version will erase XP and install W7.
There really is no "upgrade" path from XP to W7...they are all clean
installs

I believe your .exe file will create an .iso file but I am not sure on this
point.
I hate downloading OS....

Well, you are right. I knew I wouldn't be able to "upgrade". I just
thought clean-installing from an upgrade version would be more
complicated than it turned out to be.

I just jumped in, and fortunately had a good outcome.

I saved my backups to my second partition, and saved the Win7 files
there too. Then I just ran the .exe from the second partition, and the
new OS installed over my main-partition XP files, remarkably without any
complications.

From start to finish I was back online within 20 minutes. That's gotta
be some kind of record! It's certainly my personal best.

The Vi$ta trick might still work with Win 7:

1. Boot PC with installation CD, choose Custom Install
(Note: *DO NOT* enter product key because this step WILL NOT
accept a Upgrade version key)
2. After step (1), login Win 7, run SETUP.EXE from the DVD drive,
choose Custom Install again (you can now enter the product key
of the Upgrade DVD)
3. After (2), you got a clean install, and you could optionally
delete Windows.OLD on your hard disk

Glad it worked for you
Some people seem to be having real difficulty with the download from Digital

Um, no CD or DVD. :)

Ohhhhh interesting. I did successfully install it just using the .exe,
run from my second partition. I didn't put in the key during install
because it let me opt not to. I can see now that was the key to my
success. :)

I am relieved that I am not the only person who was confused by that.
