We have a problem on a terminal server on a network we just took over
maintenance of:

The file types and associations are all messed up but if we goto tools >
folder options > File Types we can't change or edit anything, all of the
buttons are greyed out, is there a registry key, or keys we can change to get
..doc files assocaited with Word again ?

Most likely there are Group Policy restrictions on the computer preventing
access to the settings you need. If you run the support tool gpresult on it
you will see Group Policies that are being applied for "user configuration"
and for domain computers that are not domain controllers you can try logging
on as a "local" administrator [non domain account] in which case domain user
configuration will not apply. If you try that and the restrictions are still
in place then either local Group Policy [gpedit.msc] or registry settings
are blocking access. Look at the settings under user
configuration/administrative templates/Windows components/Windows Explorer
to find the settings that may be blocking access. For a non domain computer
or while logged on with a local account and you still can not get access
then enable or disable the associated settings via Group Policy that should
allow you access to see if that helps. --- Steve
