I have a laptop which beeps e.g. when you empty the
recycle bin.
I tried to find the beep service (as I remeber from NT4)
in the services section in control panel. It is not there.
When I issue "net stop beep" on a prompt however the
response is that it was stopped succesfully.
When I start it again (succesfully also) and issue "net
start" it gives a list of started services, however "beep"
is not in the list.
In the registry editor however I can also see it. I
checked on other machines as well, same everywhere.
There seem to be a lot of services not visible in "the
normal way".
Does anyone have a sensible explanation for this or maybe
even a method to change this? I don't like this hidden
services, especially after the msblast, which killed the
RPC service (and caused a reboot in XP) as everyone knows
I guess.

Greetings
Etienne

Hi Etienne,

The system file beep.sys can be found in Device Manager if you change the View to
Show Hidden Devices: Non-Plug and Play Drivers. For more information, see the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles:

KB315539 - Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not Connected to the
Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=315539

BTW, for future question about WindowsXP I suggest that you post in a Windows XP
newsgroup such as microsoft.public.windowsxp.general:

Your newsgroup message header seems to indicate that you are posting to the Microsoft
Public Newsgroups using the Microsoft Communities Web Page. If I am correct, if you
click the first link below it will open your browser to the:

Microsoft Communities Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
http://communities.microsoft.com/Newsgroups/default.asp?ICP=MSCOM&sLCID=US&newsgroup=
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

If you read newsgroups using a NNTP newsreader, such as Outlook Express, and
use the msnews.microsoft.com news server, here is a link:
