Hi,

I have a problem with windows 2000 Advanced server cluster setup. I
have a seperate node for Active Directory, DC and DNS setup and two
other nodes for cluster setup. I was able to setup Node A properly with
cluster name as CLUSTER_WIN2K with an ip 16.180.19.70 under the subnet
255.255.254.0 but When I started installing Node B, Windows Install
program asked me for
a Cluster Name that this node should join. I specified the name
"CLUSTER_WIN2K", however Node B could not join the Cluster with this
error

"Error: The specified cluster name could not be found on the network.
Make sure the cluster is running and that the cluster node is
reachable from this node. "

Found a solution in NET saying if we add this CLUSTER_WIN2K IP in DNS
this should be able to resolve. But even after adding this entry in DNS
also i am hitting the same problem.

And in "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272129" link found that latest
patches will resove this issue. I have all latest patches applied to my
machines. So could you please help in resolving this issue? Any inputs
or directions will be much appriciated.

First I would check:

can you ping the cluster name from Node-B (before you try to join it to the
cluster)

Edwin.

Hi Edwin,

Thanks for your response. Yes. I am able to ping to the
clustername from Node-B. And even all my private and public network
configurations seems to be perfect as I am able to ping to NODE-A and
DomainController hosted machine. ( My setup is having 3 nodes in which
one is having DC and other two nodes for cluster setup. All 3 machines
are in the same domain)

But this time when I added this cluster IP and name in the forward
lookup zone of DNS server, I got some different error. "An error
occurred while trying to retrieve Cluster service account information
from another member of the cluster. Access is denied. Error ID:
5(00000005). "

Since I am using Administrative account itself to add this node-B
to cluster service running in node-A, I dont feel this is something to
do with access privilege problem. Any idea on this ?

Shivaraj,

What user account is the cluster service running under on Node-A ?
(check in your services control panel on Node-A)

and what user account do you give to the setup wizard when joining Node-B ?

ensure they are both the same

edwin.

Hi Edwin,

I am using same account ( Administrator account itself ) for
configuring cluster on both nodes. Even I tried the same creating a
local user called "cluster" following below mentioned steps.
--------------------------------------
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and
click Active Directory Users and Computers.
Click the + to expand Reskit.com (if it is not already expanded).
Click Users.
Right-click Users, point to New, and click User.
Type in the cluster name as shown in Figure 5 below and click Next.
Set the password settings to User Cannot Change Password and Password
Never Expires. Click Next and then click Finish to create this user.

Right-click Cluster in the left pane of the Active Directory Users and
Computers snap-in. Select Properties from the context menu.
Click Add Members to a Group.
Click Administrators and click OK. This gives the new user account
administrative privileges on this computer.
Close the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.
--------------------------------------
but in both cases I hit the same problem. One more thing what i
observed is, Eventhough i can ping to Node-B from Node-A, I am unable
to access any shared directories of other node (from both sides)... But
I am able to access all shared directories from 3rd node i.e having PDC
(primary domain controller)... Not sure will this be a problem. But
just a reference for you as you might get some hint regarding getting
where the problem is...

The user you should use is a Domain User, which is added to the local
Administrators Group on all nodes

- do not use a local user
- do not use a local Administrator

Please let me know if you still have problems

and.... yes, using the Domain user which is going to run your Cluster
Service, you should be able to access shares from each node to each node. If
you cannot do that... you need ensure that is working first, as something
with your security setup is wrong.

Edwin.

Hi Edwin,

Finally I reconfigured everything ( including OS installation ). This
time everything went fine!! . I am able to add node B to the domain.
Once again thanks for your suggestions and hits in analysing this
problem. Have a nice day.

Cheers,
Shivaraj
