Steve Sr.

I know this is off topic here but it seems likely that some of you
spend more time behind Windows than I do.

I am looking for a good refrence / how-to book for configuring and
administering a Win 2K SP4 box. Currently it is not networked except
to a dial-up internet connection but may eventually network another
local box.

I am hoping to find something that is at the level of a power user.
This is my first time that I'm outside the reach of the IT gurus so
have to do all of the configuration and maintenance myself.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Its very easy to network two machines, and there is a wealth of
information on the net. A "power user" book is total overkill for
networking two machines.

It's not the connection, but the security issues that need to be
carefully watched ;)

Try security or hacker books.

Thanks for the comments on networking but actually networking was the
lowest on the list.

The most recent question I had related to setting up users and
installing programs. I will be the only user for all practical
purposes and was wondering whether I should just use the Administrator
account or setup myself as a single user with administrative
privileges. I don't know if there is really any difference from a
security standpoint between the two.

The next issue deals with installing software. If It is installed
under Administrator then I believe all users have access to it.
However if it is installed under a user account then I don't believe
that the Administrator account has access to it. At least this seems
to be what happened when I installed Winzip.

These are the kinds of questions that I'm looking for answers.

Thanks,

Steve

Regarding admin account: use this for installing all your software, for
security rename the admin account and give it a good password ie: letters
and numbers. create an account for general use especially using the internet
because if a hacker gets your admin account your computer is in the hands of
the devil !!!!!
As for a good book, have a look at Sybex books because you never know you
might end up doing an mcp on Windows 2000
all the best!

Thanks for the suggestions on the user accounts. I wasn't aware that
you could "rename" accounts especially the Admin. From this it sounds
like ther is really no difference between the Admin account and any
other user accounts with Admin privileges.

I did notice the default "guest" account complete with no password! I
tried deleting the account since I could see no need for it but
Windows wouldn't let me so I at least set a password.

I'll take a look at Sybex books at my next visit to the book store.
