created a domain in w2003, added users, etc. but from a workstation I cant
change the computer to be a member of that domain. It cant find it yet I
can ping it.

are there any settings in the domain that I didnt do?

Thanks,

Did you set up DNS? If so, how? What DNS server does the server point to and
what DNS server does the client point to?

but from a workstation I cant
change the computer to be a member of that domain.

How are you doing this? What happens when you try? Error messages?

Danny, I think I may see the problem. the DNS on the domain is the domain's
IP addr; however, I have another domain - which I will kill in a month or
so - which has its IP addr and DNS with the same IP.

can I have two DNS on the same gateway? If not, can I change the DNS from
the domain which is to be scrapped to the IP addr of the new domain?

thanks,
Raul Rego

the dns addr - the same as its IP; the new domain have an IP and the dns

the workstation dns and domain match.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Domains don't "have an IP" the computers
on the domain have IP's.

Basic AD DNS setup:
Point the DNS server set up for the AD domain to itself for DNS in the
properties of TCP/IP (use the actual IP address not 127.0.0.10
Point all AD clients to the DNS server set up for the AD domain ONLY.
For Internet access, either set up you AD DNS server to forward requests and
list your ISP's DNS server as the forwarder or use root hints.

Here is the definition of a gateway:

Simply put clients send a request for a resource outside of your domain to
the default gateway set up on the client.

Danny, this is what I have
NIC 1 10.21.50.25
255.255.255.0
Gw 10.21.50.1
DNS 10.21.50.25
10.21.50.30

NIC2 10.21.50.30
255.255.255.0
10.21.50.1

10.21.50.25
10.21.50.30

With the 2 cards conn. to the Cisco switch or only card1, I cant login to
the domain or make a machine a member

However, with only nic2 connected to the switch, everything works!

does this make sense?

thanks,
Raul Rego
