when active directory is setup and its dns is setup, I have one question:

why we have two zones:

_mcsds.mycompany.local

and mycompany.local ??

HOw do I change these two zones to mycompany.com ?

This is the new setup for DNS in 2003 where the _msdcs
zone is split from the domain zone.

two question:

1. can you explain just little bit the significance of this....? what is
this for , what I should expect, and why ?
2. Another question - if I create the Active Directory DNS zone as
mycompnay.local and mycompany.com , what significance difference I will have
for these two situations ? Do I expect to see all the sub zones or sub
folders inside main zones the same for these two types of zones. ? Like what
I would see if I have mycompany.com and if I have mycompany.local ?

In answer to your first question:
The _msdcs is part of the forestwide DNS information. It holds important
information on DB GUIDs and Global Catalog information for the forest. This
separation (or delegation) of this zone was introduce in Windows 2000 as a
manual step to insure that a copy of this important zone information can be
created as secondaries on subdomain DCs throughout the forest. In Windows
2003, this delegation is done automatically and the zone information is held
in the application partition of the Active Directory and replicated to DCs
in the forest.
Additional information regarding this behaviour can be found on the MS
website if you do a search for "_msdcs." or application partition.

To your second question:
No the same behaviour will not occur, the above mentioned behaviour will
only occur with your Active Directory DNS Zone which holds you forestwide AD
information.
