Win 2000 Server Pinging the world

Can someone please tell me what I turned on to cause my
win 2k server to ping every possible ip address and to
keep doing so. This is a new server install and I can
not figure out what service is causing this, I stopped
all internet related services but it is still doing
this. It is bogging down my server, my firewall and my
gateway.

Any help would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Al

This isn't a function of the OS. This typically indicates that you have been infected with a virus or trojan. Please update all
critical updates for the OS and then update your AV software and perform a full scan immediately. You may also want to take
the box offline duing this process to keep it from potentially infecting other machines.

Thank you,

Michael,

Normally I would agree with you without hesitation. I hesitate witrh regards to virus or trojan only because this is a brand new install. Re-partioned drives from a netware server to a win 2k server, but anything is possible. I will do as you advise, download all updates, apply SP4 and install Symantec Antivirus Corporate edition, and run the scans to see what pops up. I will advise you on how I make out with this. Oh by the way, the machine is behind a firewall that does not allow any inbound traffic as well.

Michael,

Thanks for your help again. I found the problem. It appears the WINS Client service was somehow installed, set to start automatically and was running, causing it to search for every machine on the network. In doing so it was taking the very first IP address of my subnet pinging it and incrementing it by one thus searching for a machine on every possible ip address. Once I stopped the WINS Client service this behavior stopped.

I am still going to install the rest of the updates because it is only good practice to do so as well as the antivirus software.

Have a great day,
Al
