Win 2000 client doesn't redraw after popups

I have 2 PCs running XP as remote servers and a Windows 2000 (SP4) PC that connects to them. The XPs work fine with each other, but on the 2000 when a window pops up and goes away (such as a message balloon or splash window), it doesn't redraw the space under it. Instead I get a pattern of desktop icons.

Is there any workaround for this? I gets pretty bad when mousing over list entries where each pops up a message balloon.

Thanks

How slow is your connection? This typically happens on extremely slow

My other solution is to make sure you are using the latest display
drivers available (note - if you use Nvidia, make sure you disable the
Nvidia Display Driver Service or you won't be able to log on with
remote desktop).
