I have a 20GB WD hard drive that I bought some time ago and installed Windows 2000 on it using the NTFS file system. I went to reformat the drive to reinstall Win 2000 and I kept getting a damaged disk error after the formatting process would show 100%. I checked the drive using the WD tools and all checked out fine. I ended up giving up with trying to install Win 2000 and decided to try Windows XP. The Windows XP install went without a hitch. I ran XP for a while and then I installed the hard drive into a new computer. I wanted this new computer to use Windows 2000. Again I was unable to reformat the drive and install Win 2000. Again I went to Win XP and was able to refomat the drive and install. Since I did not want to run XP I tried to install Win 2000 again. Still no go on reformatting the drive but was able to install Win 2000 over XP without reformatting the drive. All seems to be running fine but my question is why I wasnt able to reformat the drive during the Windows 2000 install process and was able to format with the Windows XP install process? Is the hard drive trully done for?
