I'm currently using WinAmp 2.20; I see that WinAmp is now up to v5.02

Is there any compelling reason not to, upgrade?

Winamp5 features a built-in cd-ripper (encodes to AAC), support for
Winamp2/3 skins & plugins, and video playback.

If you are satisfied with Winamp 2.20, then you can stick with it. If
you desire cd-ripping and video playback, then go for 5.

Hi Andy, long time no read.

It has become bulkier and has a lot more features, so if you aren't interested
in an all-round media player/encoder/coffee-brewer don't bother.

On the other hand, there are plenty of reasons to update. If you like eye candy,
the new skinning engine actually isn't halfbad (when compared to the abysmal
Winamp3). There's also the video integration, the built-in global hotkeys, the
media library and a bunch of other stuff that some people love (I don't,
personally, so I went for a barebones install of Winamp 5).

At the very least, I'd recommend you upgrade to 2.81 (or 2.91) as 2.20 is rather
old. Oldversion.com has both available for download.

Winamp 2.95 is the last 2.x version.

That's what I am using.

You find it by following the "classic winamp" links on winamp.com, if I
recall correctly.

I tried looking for it now but no luck, they have remade the web site since
I downloaded 2.95.
Now there is a page with all possible information about 2.9x versions,
except where to find it. http://winamp.com/nsdn/winamp2x/

I know the filenames though, winamp295rc_full.exe, or replace full with
lite for the lite version. I see it is available from a small number of web
sites.

Yeah, I know. I recommended an older Winamp, because they started
to add lots of features around 2.81, if I remember correctly. 2.95 contains
some of the features that later went into Winamp 5 and is really not what
he wants if he's after an old-school, no-fuss version of Winamp.

I used 2.82 for a long time, and changed to 2.95 some 3-4 months ago.

I think 2.95 is clearly better, it is more stable.
2.82 had some bugs they have obviously fixed.

I only use the basic functions, to play mp3, wav, midi, and shoutcast
stations. So I don't know about any other problems.

I'd recommend trying out our MP3 player-Babya bPlayer as it is a smaller
download size and is easy to use:

Personally I cannot say getting WinAmp 5 is of any real purpose. If
you like the 2.x versions then definitely grab v2.95 since the later
2.9x versions fixed some buffer overflow problems. I have v2.95 and
v5.02 installed and really there isn't that much difference when you
don't pay attention to the "Pro" features. My music media player of
choice these days is foobar2000.

Yes, you can play .avi,*.mp3 and other media files (if a appropiate codec is
installed).I can play .wma files with it.

But can it convert filetypes like Real, WMA, midi, NES, and SNES game music
files to WAV or MP3? Winamp can.

Thank you (and to everyone else who offered advice about WinAmp)

Can someone please remind me what the differences between Lite, Full and
Standard versions are?

The size. :-)

I always install the full version, but I seldom use anything more than the
basic functions.
Sometimes I look at the animations, or screensavers.

So I am not sure what you would lose on using the lite version.
Maybe you wouldn't have to close some extra little web page window which
can popup when you listen to radio stations sometimes.

Well, the lite and standard version does not support as many audio types
as the full version. For example, lite misses MIDI and MOD.
(Yet, you can get the support for this audio types by installing the
fitting plugin - so, in fact standard and lite really just have less
plugins included by default)

I've been using IIRC 2.48 or whatever it was with WAJukebox for Winamp
covering the lousy Winamp interface. I installed 5.0 the other night
and was surprised to see what appears to be a full "jukebox" interface
on it. So I may stick with 5.0 unless it does something stupid. I
haven't used it enough yet to be sure.
