will works 4.0 work with XP?

i have 4.0 from a previous computer and lots of documents
in 4.0. the computer store told me that he tried to load
4.0 into an xp computer and it crashed the computer. he
advised me to not load 4.0 into my new computer. is this
true or was he trying to sell me something? will 4.0
hurt anything on xp?
 
You can try using Windows XP's Program Compatibility Wizard to install
Works 4.0, but it may not work. If it doesn't, then consider upgrading to
the newest version of Works Suite.

I've had Works 4.5a installed before but have never tried 4. Service packs
and Y2K updates had to be installed for Works. It worked fine.

I have no experience with Works 4.0 on Windows XP, and can't
answer the question directly. But let me point out two things:

1. Most computer store employess make very close to minimum wage,
and don't know a whole lot about computers. If they did, they
would be able to get better jobs. Do not blindly trust the
knowledge of such a person; even if he's not trying to sell you
something, he may simply be wrong.

2. Even if the person you spoke with is competent and not trying
to sell you something, a report of a single incident of a product
crashing a computer is worth very little. There might be all
kinds of reasons for the problem having nothing to with any
incompatibility between XP and Works 4.0

There are no guarantees, but it's highly unlikely that installing
any application program will hurt something on the operating
system. You have little to lose by trying it. If it works, great.
If it doesn't work, even if it crashes the computer (it probably
won't), just uninstall it; it's unlikely that it will damage
anything.
