Hello. I am inexperienced at setting up networks and
such, but was wondering if I could use Windows XP to run
a server in my small business without having to buy the
more expensive Windows Server edition software? I have 4
computers to network including the server with a shared
printer and DSL internet connection. Will tape backup
work with XP? What are my options, or where could I go to
find info on this? Thank you for any information.

Technically yes you can, but if you need more than 10 concurrent connections
or would like to install products like Exchange or need DNS/DHCP services
you would need server.

Thanks for the info.

File sharing and printer sharing will work fine, up to the
XP PRO limit of 10 concurrent connections to its resources.

Tape backup across a WinDuhs network is iffy -- it depends on
the tape and the backup software you bought. If you intend
to use the backup app that is included with XP, you will
probably find it limited for stand-alone use and a total kludge
for backups across a network.
