Do you know if Windows XP applictions will run in Windows Home?

Yes, they will. There will be some exceptions, of course, especially
programs that involve a more nitty gritty interaction with the system e.g.
anti-virus programs, system utilities etc.
Windows 7 will come with a "Compatibility Mode" which enables you to run
programs "as if" they were running on another version of Windows e.g.
Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
Furthermore, Windows 7 Professional (but not Home or Basic) will include a
somewhat integrated Windows XP virtual machine - business applications that
need Windows XP will be able to run on the Windows XP virtual machine (which
runs on top of Windows 7, of course).
To sum up, with rare exceptions, programs that run on Windows XP will run on
Windows 7 one way or another (natively or natively in Compatibility Mode ..
or on an integrated virtual machine (XP)).

Likely it will not run in Win7 Home as that version does not offer the XP
virtualization mode it would require as Office 97 is a very old application
that is not compatible with Vista and highly unlikely to be natively
compatible with Win7.

You said Office 97 moments ago. Which do you mean? If you are asking
about Office 2007, yes, it runs under Windows 7 just fine.

In your reply to Richard G. Harper you mentioned the old Office 97 from the
year 1997. I don't know about it - it does work on Vista (apparently you
might have to ignore occasional warnings ) - and so probably should run on
Windows 7 - but I haven't come across confirmation on that one

People have gotten it to run on Vista - although they report they have to
ignore dialogue boxes with warnings.

Windows 7 Home will not have XP virtual emulation mode like
Professional and Ultimate versions will. Win7 does have the
option of running a program in so called Compatiability mode
from the programs setting. I would say that XP programs are
working half the time in that setting. If the XP program
interacts with a device then about 1/4 of the time I can
make it run.

Yep, I've just tried for you, on my Win 7 Ult (64bit) -
MS Office 97 Professional Edition. Windows 7 is reading
whole CD with no problems. Although I haven't completed
installation entirely - but it's safe to assume that if there was
any problem it would appear at the first couple of minutes.
