All I want to know is can I (having windows messenger)
talk with someone who has AOL messenger?

Greetings Nancy,

No, AOL Instant Messenger operates on AOL's Instant Messaging network and Windows Messenger
operates on Microsoft's .NET Messenger network -- they're completely separate networks and
applications.

If you wish to contact a user on AOL, you'll need to either use AOL Instant Messenger:
http://www.aim.com

or use an "all-in-one" client like Trillian:

Fortunately SMTP, NMTP,.. have been specified long bevor comercial
interests of companies came into play... otherwise I needed account at
microsoft for posting to this group or an hotmail account for mailing
to friends...

Why can't the major players not agree on a comon protocol...
