You might want to take a look at this, and also if you go to
http://support.microsoft.com/ and put "sp2" in the search, you are going to
see some new articles every few days for a while that will help with
application compatibility. Also the beta sites like
http://www.neowin.net/
are all over incompatabilities and helpful workarounds in their forums.

*Norton Products 2002-2005 and SP2 Without the Update Patch delivered via
Live Update*
As to Norton 2002, I'd respectfully disagree with Carey. I got interested
in how Norton products would work with SP2, so I tested Norton 2002, 2003,
and 2005 Beta with SP2 RTM in a variety of situations. I didn't see any
difference in 2002 and 2003 System Works' behavior whether I installed them
into SP1 and then downloaded SP2 or I installed them into SP2 RTM. Reports
by many people on SP2 through RTM on 2004 are mixed; some have problems and
some don't.
I can find MSKBs that say contradictory things about which should be
installed first. The general party line from MSFT in all their current SP2
material is to uninstall the antivirus software before installing the
service pack. I didn't find it made a difference.
Norton will of course run a test from their site, and tell you anything you
have is obsolete unless you have the newest box. That is just not true.
And there are any number of sites that have done analytical breakdowns of
the changes Norton has made in NAV, NSW, and NIS over the last three years
and it just doesn't seem to have been clinically significant. What I found
was that basically anything I tested pre-Norton 2005 needs the Norton patch
released August 10 delivered only via Live Update to have SP2 compatibility.
They have a schedule for some of their Symantec products to be patched that
stretches for two months from now and it's sketchy.
The main ingredients in the Norton mix are two and I found them both to work
perfectly in 2002 and 2003. Those are 1) Auto Protect 2) Updating
definitions. Autoprotect has not changed significantly from 2002 through
2005. As a hype, they are putting a piece of their so-called Worm
Protection in NAV 2005--i.e some code from their firewall because they had
to figure out some incentive to advertise on the yellow box to make you
"want to update."
I found script blocking, file scanning, and email protection to work
perfectly in 2002 and 2003 without the patch. You don't even need them, not
because they aren't important--they are, but they are hype. Autoprotect
does every thing they do. They are simply *redundant hype* and any
Symantec/Norton engineer will verify this if asked.
What won't work often in 2002-2003 is a full system scan which can be done
from any site including Norton's anyway, and Live Update. You will
consistently get this error:
Error: Unable to open the antivirus\tasks\mycomp.sca file
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...ge=english&module=3019&error=3&build=Symantec
Also every time you boot in 2002 and 2003 without the new patch, you have
to right click the Norton icon in the notification area and put a check in
Auto-Update. That's an annoyance but it's not digging ditches. It'll give
you the KB that a 3rd party has altered Norton AV--that 3rd party is
Norton's Platinum Partner and future huge antivirus competitor--Microsoft.
Live Update has plug-ins that are not really needed at all to do what they
sell the boxes for--to protect you from viruses. There is a paradox that
they will not offer the patch from their site, but only from Live Update and
if Norton KB 1812 can't fix Live Update, then you can't get the patch.
Maybe someone can send it to you and there is a way to get it in.
How to Fix Norton Live Update

NAV 2005 works fine, and it is even recognized by the *Windows Security
Center*--the control panel applet for people who aren't reading here and
can't figure out if their firewall and AV are on, or can't type
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.mspx --actually
microsoft.com/technet
into their browser. The problem I saw consistently in about 10 installs of
NAV 2005 was that the Norton box that comes up on your desktop "the status
screen" or called "the integrator" if you have NSW or NIS will show refresh
in all its categories. These are fixed some of the time with the Norton
KB below and it has been occuring since Norton 2001 in all versions during
the time of Win 9x--it is an IE/Java Script problem and is fixed by
downloading the Windows Script Host 5.6 components and reregistering the
jscript by typing "reserver32 /jscript.dll" in your run box

In fact, the last box before a successful install of NAV 2005 is a box
saying to turn off the easily shut off if a bad guy wants to Windows
Firewall--so it won't conflict with their firewall which they want to assert
is better. Some people are finding a lot of fault with the Windows
firewall, and opting for more robust 3rd party software firewalls and a
router for a hardware firewall.

Will install SP2 in a few days on my PC with XP Pro
SP1a. But before I got through the whole hell/fun-ness
of it, I have a few questions.
1. Java. Because MS got rid of the Java Virtual Machine,
I now use the Sun Java Webstart. Anyone have problems
with this and SP2?
2. Can I use the Google Toolbar WITH the new IE6 Pop-Up
Blocker? I love the auto-fill feature, but Google Toolbar
has really dropped off in the # of pop-ups it will catch.
Now it lets about 10-20 a day through.
3. I use P2P programs and I am worried about the new TCP
limit of 10 downloads at once. I hear its impossible to
fix with a registry tweak. Any other way around it?
4. I use Norton AntiVirus 2002 Pro. Anyone have any
problems with it?
5. Anyone notice any problems after applying SP2 with
their Audigy 2 ZS sound card?
6. I use Divix. But I hear folks have been having
problems. What free version can I use without problems?
Besides the above, what I plan on doing is backing up
EVERYTHING any way. Apply the SP2 and see how it works
out. What breaks. Then I will wipe my C:\ drive and re-
install fresh from scratch and then add SP2 as well. But
some help for the above questions would be nice.
Thanks
