This is a well documented issue which has been posted across, in particular,
the Announcement and General Discussion newsgroups. There has also been some
input from the MSFT guys regarding the issue. Using the search function type:
`Invalid Pointer` and you will see what I mean.

Hello All

I have installed Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1186.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1315.1 on a XP SP2 computer.

Originally I could not update automatically or manually. Finally the manual
update worked. Now the updating will not work again.

In addition, now I can not "Start Scan". I keep getting the following error
message.

Windows Defender encountered an error 0x80004003, Invalid pointer.

I accept "OK" and the error screen goes away, but still no scanning.

I am tempted to uninstall this program as i am losing patience with it!
However, before I do this are there any fixes?

Thankyou

Hello All

Thanks for the suggestions. I will work through them.

If you choose Scan from the menus, can you can that way? This is a bug.

I have not been able to scan from the menus either.

What happens--what error (or hang?) do you get when you attemt a scan via
the menus? About the only advice I have is that in some cases, either a
chkdsk run, or scanning in safe mode (or both) can be helpful for scanning
issues.
