Hi,
I am trying to repair a clients laptop (Toshiba A60, XP home) . I was told
that it kept starting up and there were missing files messages so it would
stall and not open. When I try to start it up most of the time the screen
will not even come on. After about 10 tries I have been able to get to the
Toshiba splash screen only. I changed the Bios to boot from CD and have
inserted the recovery disk but all I get is a 'booting from CD' line but it
doesn't actually do anything. I have tried another CD and also a BART bootup
CD but just am unable to get past the first screen to appear.

I can't open in safe mode. In fact there is no sign what ever of Windows
starting up

A teenager who 'knows it all' had the computer so there is no saying what he
has deleted to try and make it a better machine. Hoever I am fairly stuck
now and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Lenny

First thing I'd do is reset the BIOS to factory defaults.
Then I'd use the recovery console to repair Windows.
Only when all else has failed would I consider a complete
re-install. Note that recovery CDs recover nothing except
the factory installation, so be warned: data that isn't backed
up will be lost.

Things seem to have taken a turn for the worse now. I haven't been able to
get it to turn on at all (nothing on the display or on a second monitor
attached to the back). Is there anything that I can try to get that to
start?

I forgot to mention. I haven't been able to put the Bios back to defaults
yet because it will not start

The laptop has major hardware failure. This has nothing to do with
Windows. Contact Toshiba tech support.

Sounds terminal to me. Get Toshiba to service it and send
any bill to the know-it-all teenie... :-)
