i recently installed sp2 but i don't think that is the root of the problem, i
did however defrag the hard drive and as far as i can tell it may be the
triggered it so that media player won't play mp3 files anymore, when i try to
it pops up the send error report screen, i have reinstalled MP10 multiple
times and it doesn't work still. I can't restore it back before because i
don't have a restore point anymore. the only other cause i can think of is
that it thinks it doesnt have the licenses for the mp3 files even though they
have no licenses attached. But i would think that that wouldn't cause it to
crash. heres the error report:

can anyone help me please

Open WMP and click Tools and Options
Click the File Types tab and check MP3 and others you want
Click Apply and OK

Thanks for your help but thats not the problem, the files will not play from
within WMP. I click on a file in WMP and it says "Opening Media" for a
second and then I get the error message that WMP has crashed.

Solution to Media Player will not play MP3/WMV/WMA

I also had this problem and was initially discouraged by the lack of resolution I found in searching for answers to a problem reported over the past 2 years at least.

My error report was the same as:
Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 10.0.0.3802, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x45c7c033.

I was successful in resolving the problem. Keeping in mind the similarity that my other user accounts could work MP3 files successfully while I the 'admin account' could not, I chose to look at the registry for the accounts. I decided to export both the successful, working MediaPlayer account and exported/backed up my existing media player account to a neutral spot, directly on the C drive... (export location not overly relevant - just know where to find it later)... With the Admin account logged in I went to Regedit - HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer... Other working accounts found from Accounts are found under... HKey_Users\(select a user profile from one that works - one place to know who the profile owner is would be to go into the numbered profile, something like S-1-5-21-515923499-78916283-6234103330-1008.... Look in Software\Microsoft\Mediaplayer\Preferences - There you will see actual names of the person on the user accounts).

After verifying the working user account, do a File - Export of the entire (working) MediaPlayer Folder for that user to the same prior location.

Now delete the non-working MediaPlayer registry key.

Go up one level back to the level of HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft, with Microsoft highlighted and import the saved working registry key of the other user. It may not immediately appear in the Registry window, but if you close Regedit and reopen it, it will be there again. Now go run Media Player with your MP3/WMV and have fun like before the ugly Media Player registry bug bit you.
