I have a computer with Windows XP Home, the other day it froze and when
rebooted it came up with following missing or corrupted
\windows\system32\config\system. I tried to use the Recovery Console, I tried
repairing it, I tried to get it to go into Safe Mode and still everytime I
reboot it goes to the Welcome screen then absolutely nothing just a blank
black screen. It did say that it found one error and repaired it.
Because I have backups I decided to reinstall the Windows. I deleted and
reformatted the partion, it went through the install process normally but it
still goes to the Welcome screen and then blank. However I can now get it to
go into Safe Mode.

This group is for spyware discussion, but to answer your question, it sounds
like a hardware issue, vid card or ram, actually it could be a number of
things

Hi J Street,

Looks like a virus that stays in the bios, so take out the battery and
let it out for a hour while the PC is not connected to the power and do
a full format, not the fast! Then install again but let the network
cable out the PC, put that on after you put on a virus scanner.
Ok let us know how this work for you.
