Will not contact the web link for download of a file

When I click on a link on a web page to download a file a
dialog box appears that informs me that it can't contact
the web site and to try later. No matter what I have
checked I can not fix this. I have checked security
settings and have changed nothing that would cause this.
I have tried for 2 days to fix this problem. How can I
find out what is stopping downloading? I have no
firewall installed on the computer and am using a DSL
modem and router that has been working great for 2
years. I can surf the net fine. Everything else works
great.

Is it just one specific web page that does this, or any site where you try to
download something?

Can you provide a couple of the links to files you have tried to download?
