I have a Nova Tech , 64 pro using a asus K8V deluxe motherboard . the main hard drive is 160 gig sata ATA and everything has been working fine
I am trying to add a 40 gig Maxtor IDE additional drive. When this drive is added , and I reboot this message comes up, reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device. I have tried all combinations of connecting this drive to the motherboard, master, slave, primary, secondary, etc
I can get the BIOS to recognise the drive , but it still won't boot from the sata Drive. I have been on various helplines, websites and sent numerous e-mails , but nobody seems able to help me. I do not want to set this drive up as a raid configuration . just an additional drive. I have also tried every configurations in the BIOS , but with no avail
When I disconnect the Maxtor from the motherboard , everything is okay again. I have been told that the only way I can do this, is to configure the raid . surely this is incorrect

Whats the boot order, in the bios?
Using a sata drive, and presumably youve installed sata drivers, even if you
dont want to use raid, it should I recollect be set to SCUSSI first then

According to Asus your mainboard has 2 controllers... the Promise controller
and a fully integrated controller on the South Bridge - both with SATA and
PATA (Parallel ATA) connections.

It may be that you have both the SATA and PATA drives connected to the
Promise controller... that might explain why, with the SCSI boot selected,
it detects the PATA drive first and rejects it as not being the boot device.

If so.. you could try connecting the PATA drive to the other controller,
your manual should have a clear diagram of the relevant connectors positions
on the mainboard. You may need to consult the manual to check if the BIOS
settings need to be adjusted.

Hope that helps

Hi Kirk

Just to add

The K8V Deluxe has 4 SATA connections and 3 IDE(PATA) connections, one of
which is designated as the Primary RAID IDE. It would seem that your best
option would be to connect the PATA hard drive to one of the connectors
currently used by one of your CD drives. You could then double up the CD
drives on the other connector or place one in tandem with the hard drive...
it isn't clear if you've attempted that yet.

Please respond through the newsgroup.

Hope that helps
Pete

pete,i have already done that and it was still the same,it seems that once the IDE drive is connected that controller over-rides the primary raid

OK Kirk

Wasn't sure if you'd tried that... had to be sure. It seems to be the only
way to connect the PATA drive outside of a RAID array though.

It would seem that you have the SATA drive connected to the Promise
controller (?). That may be why it's preferring the PATA drive connected to
the standard IDE as a boot device when it's available.

Swap the SATA over to the SATA connection beside the VIA controller
(labelled as SATA 1 on page 28 of the manual). This may be more complicated
than it seems. It's possible that you'll have to run a repair install after
physically moving the HDDrive to reconfigure XP - only one way to find out.

Make sure you have changed the settings in the BIOS to disable the Promise
controller... enable the Boot from on-chip SATA and select the SATA drive as
the boot device.

If you've tried this before let us know.

Hope that helps

Pete, it worked a treat and i did not have to run repair install after.
thanks a lot for your help.
