Will Microsoft ever Release Media Center Edition as a Stand Alone Operating System?

I know that this message is a little too late, because of Vista coming, but
here's the question: Will Microsoft ever Release Media Center Edition as a
Stand Alone Operating System? I have friends that have MCE. I want MCE and
do not want have to spend at least 498 bucks on a new PC, when I already
have a good pc.

I would doubt it.

Perhaps you have heard some versions of Windows Vista include 'Media Center
Edition' functionality?

Not for use on a $450.00 computer, which is why I didn't even mention it.

Are we reaching the point where operating system prices and box prices pass
going in opposite directions?

It is usually much cheaper and much less troublesome to purchase a pre-configured and pre-tested system for MCE than to try and upgrade an existing system.

Media Center has higher hardware requirements than other versions of Windows XP. MCE 2005 requires at least a 1.6 GHz processor, DirectX 9 hardware-accelerated GPU and 256 MB of RAM. Some functionality, such as Media Center Extender support, use of multiple tuners, or HDTV playback/recording carries even higher system requirements.

Media Center is much more restricted in the range of hardware that it supports. Media Center tuners must have a standardized driver interface, and they must have hardware MPEG-2 encoders, closed caption support, and a number of other features. Media Center remote controls are standardized in terms of button labels and functionality.

If you purchase MCE and the existing system cannot be upgraded, you will simply have a version of XP that has many features that you cannot use.

You can only purchase an OEM version of MCE.
