Hi,

I have 2 generic questions. I am using an older version
of Frontpage (I think 98) to do my clubs web site. I have
been requested to have a “Members only” section where each
member would be given a password to view and post
messages. Is this possible with FP2002? It looks like it
is with the Sharepoint team services feature but I wanted
to verify that before spending $170. Also, is there a
subscription fee associated with the Sharepoint team
services?

Thanks

You need to check with your web host to see if they support Sharepoint
(Windows IIS) but it can also be done if the host allows subwebs with unique
permissions.

Well...er ... well... yes.

- You can have members only section with any version of FP (or none), it's a
server configuration not a "what you use to edit" configuration.

- FP2002 does indeed (or did when I bought it) come with FPSE2002 that has
SharePoint stuff in it, you can run it after you install on the server.
Note it runs on a database back-end, using SQL or MSDE to hold data.

- In either case, you will still need to get at the server directly to do
that stuff, so check your host first before proceeding. (Ask them if they do
that type of thing already, they may have their own in house way.)

- If your site runs ASP, you can get "password scripts" to make each file
require login before proceeding. That requires no money, but does require
you to put it in every file. Also, files that are not ASP won't have that
protection (images, downloads, etc.) will still be open.

- You could make your "members only" area a sub web and configure
permissions directly from FrontPage (Tools > Permissions ... in the sub
web). Depending on the server setup it may or may not work.
