Will doom3 effect ATI's release schedule?

I'm hoping people will give me me real info vs. a nvidia vs. ati thread.
I've read the tech specs on nVidia vs. ATI, and I believe the ATI is a
superior card in many ways to the comparable nVidia. However I'm wondering
if ATI will consider either putting a lot of efforts into new drivers that
REALLY change their opengl performance - not just 5-10% or try to get their
SLI to market first or even release a new card ahead of schedule. I realize
Doom3 is only one game is a sea of games but it is such a major source for
future engines, I think it might have an impact on the hardware industry.

I doubt it will have an impact, other than in the minds of fanboys.

I'm playing the game on an X800 Pro @ 1280x1024 and think it's giving a
more than acceptable frame rate. **

If they release drivers that improve performance, great. But I reckon
they've nothing to worry about and only kneejerk naysayers would say
their turkey's been completely stuffed by NV this round.... We'll
probably end up going round in circles when HL2 turns up soon, with the
ATI people trumpetting their performance from the rooftops if they
trounce the NV cards.

Personally, I don't think either manufacturer has a "superior" card in
this round, rather a "different" card.... in that one set of cards will
perform better at some tasks than others.

Rushing to market would be a bad idea though.

** for reference I also have a 6800gt in another machine, which although
is a bloody great card, I find that the driver set just isn't as good as
the current ATI one. That's IMHO though, and YMMV etc and all the
associated crap and other acronyms and buzzwords.
 
Mind if I ask what you have your aa in doom set for? I didn't realize how
much it would improve the video but it also really slows down my fps - I
don't have a 9800 though.
 
Doom 3 isnt the big step forward in graphics we were expecting, although it is in the limelight at
the moment.

It has big textures, plus 100% bumpmapping and specular maps, but I feel that the actual texture
artwork leaves much to be desired. also, the poly counts look suspiciously low, as is the max
mumber of enemy at any one time that the game contains (and therefore, I suspect, that the game
engine can support). Finally, there is (as far as I can see so far in the game) little variation in
the levels - lots of angular corridors, so at the moment Im thinking that this is all the engine can
manage.

I think they put all their eggs in the texturing basket, and it didnt work, so I dont think this is
the game engine of the future. The lighting is cool, but I cant help feeling that the reason the
game doesnt include any large area rooms is because it cant. Certainly no city type scenes that we
see in HL2.

If you want to base a hardware buying decision on game compatibility, Id be tempted to wait. I feel
that Doom 3 is a bit of a white elephant, and certainly not a game I'd base hardware buying
decisions on.

I don't bother with AA to be honest (awaits kicking)!

Nobody can predict the future but I can make a few comments -
a few years ago game developers licensed engines by Id and Epic
in preference to making their own but thats changing. Precious few
games have been made using the U2 engine and I think we
wont see as many games based on the D3 engine as came
from the Q3 engine. The makers of Far Cry and Stalker show you
can make your own engine just as good as the 'originals'.
The majority of 3D engines use D3D now and not OpenGL and
the rumors of a OpenGL 'rewrite' from ATI seem to be unfounded.
Doom 3 does not have replay value and multiplayer (with 3 ppl !)
is a joke so where do you look for the next D3 engine game?
Quake IV ? Whoopee f***in doo.
HL2 oth looks a far better game and has plenty of multiplayer
options with ppl going over to Source versions of CS, TFC, DOD etc..

That, and the UT engine are the next gen ones to watch, IMHO.

It's a toss up, higher res or AA on lower res.
I was able to play Far Cry at 1280*1024 with medium settings and no AA, but
am playing through again at 1024*768 with everyting on high.
Not sure AA is that great IMHO.

Ppl keep saying "now that D3 is out, and the inferiority of
the ATI's OGL is exposed, ATI will finally fix the problem".
When will ppl learn? ATI has known for a long time they have
a problem, known for a long time they will take a hit when
D3 comes out.

If ATI knew how to fix, they would have done so long ago.
So stop with these 'rosey scenario', naive, wishful thinking
posts. There will be no 'magic bullit' fix for OGL games,
especially D3 which takes the biggest hit of all.
