Will a DDR graphics card work on an SDRAM system?

I bought an ATI Radeon 9000 (AGP) a few days ago and am having a devil
of a time with it. The user's manual does not seem to match the
card, the CD is about useless, and ATI's website is, perhaps, not
all we might wish it were.

Well, I just noticed that the 64M of memory on the card is DDR. My
mobo, ECS KV7MA, accepts only SDRAM. Will this board work on this
system?

There's more, but I don't feel like whining - yet! :-)

The graphics card RAM is independent of the system RAM so that's not
the issue.More likely you need to upgrade your Power Supply.

Yes, it should work. Try a different set of drivers. What problems are you
having?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I only asked because, when I booted
I got nothing. However, I have a number of things I need to try
before I actually complain. <laugh>

I thought maybe I made a blunder buying a DDR card, but now that
I know that that is not a problem, I'll just play around a bit.
No use crying prematurely, eh?

For one thing, the card didn't have the typical "feel" that comes
when a card is properly seated. I'm going to mess about there a
bit.

Also, the manual, which is *not* for my card - are you listening ATI?
- speaks of plugging things into power supplies, and all. It even says
that the "supplied" cable may already be "plugged" into the card at
one end. There was *no* cable or plug supplied. Furthermore, I see no
place on the card to plug anything in. Of course, now that it's more
or less seated, it may be a little difficult to see.

Does anyone know: Does the Radeon 9000 plug in?

BTW, I'm running W98se.

Also BTW, I just dropped into the ATI ng. This looks daunting from the
few posts I've read so far.

My mobo has onboard video, S3 Inc. ProSavage KM133, for which I d/l'd
and installed the latest drivers. So that I could uninstall them,
according to the manual. Seem's strange, but what do I know? <laugh>

It's no fun trying to work in VGA mode. Grrr.

You might have problems because of the voltage more than anything
else.

I have a Hercules 9700 but it doesn't work in my Gigabyte BX2000.
(slot one board it's so old)

It shows the post, then crashes the whole system before it even gets
near to loading windows.

Out of curiosity you are disabling this when using your ATI card right?

also "so you could uninstall them" ....... this is EXTREMELY important before installing the ATI drivers.

When you say you get 'nothing' no 'post' screen at all ?

err...well, I uninstalled the drivers for the o/b video, turned off
the 'puter, (think I) seated the card, plugged the monitor into the
new card, and turned it back on. The computer started ok (I presume),
but there was nothing but black on the monitor.

Hmmmm. How do you mean, "disable?" Do you mean on the mobo by some
jumper setting unknown to me? In the BIOS?

I think maybe I didn't. Will the new card not override the VGA, just
like the onboard video does? Oh, well...hmm...I suppose the drivers
that would do that aren't installed yet?

That's right. Nothing but black.
 
The higher-end Radeons (9700, 9800) have auxiliary power connectors because
they need more current than a standard AGP slot can provide.

The 9000 doesn't have (or need this). And,as you've already been told, the
memory type on the card has nothing to do with the main system memory.

There may be other compatibility issues. For example: is your ECS mainboard
AGP 1.0 (1x, 2x), 2.0 (up to 4x), or 3.0 (8x)? Is it a 3.3V or 1.5V slot? (I
think that the Radeon 9000 may be compatible with any of these, but it would
be good to check.)

If the KV7MA is an Athlon board, particularly using a Via chipset, you
probably want to have the latest chipset drivers installed. (And AGP
drivers, if they are separate.)

I don't know what to suggest to get it working. If you can disable the
onboard graphics in the BIOS, as well as uninstalling the drivers, that
might be a good idea. You could try the latest (3.9) "catalyst" drivers from
ATI's web site.

YOU MUST DISABLE the OB video in the bios....before inserting the card......if you did not, remove the card enable the video in
the bios.....boot into windows.....uninstall the drivers.....remove the reference in the device manager.....shut down....put in
card....boot....have the 'standard VGA display adapter' loaded into device manager (windows should do this automatically), then load
the drivers.... Good luck...
 
hmmm. there can be conflicts IF there is any sharing of system ram with video...very rare but it can happen
